Match Report by James Spackman |

With two wins needed to seal the title for The Rocks, the players were
aware that saturday was the biggest game of the season, therefore the
nerves could be felt in the changing rooms before the game. A strong St Peters contingent had travelled up to Trinant on a sunny afternoon. The game strated at a high tempo, but mistakes from both sides mean't the first ten minutes remained scoreless, eventually St Peters started to build pressure by going through the phases and a Neil Parsons penalty made it 3-0 to The Rocks. |
![]() |
|
The linout functioned superbly again and by stealing Trinant ball The
Rocks forwards drove the opposition over the line for Conky to score a
great try. Neil Parsons converted a difffucult conversion. Another penalty
made the score 13-0 at half time. The second half was a dog fight with Trinant trying to rumble up the pitch around the fringes, St Peters forwards held strong and responded with excellent defence and managed to scrag the opposition. Bear (the alcoholic) seemed to be everywhere with him and Bagsy excellent in the lineout and Spam putting his body on the line to slow the ball down was excellent. The pressure eventually told with Trinant scoring a converted try out wide to make it 13-7. The Rocks responded superbly though to go through the hands for Steve Ireland to score in the corner.. Steve was excellent and deserved his J.J. for a solid performance at full back giving the coaches a head ache of who to pick at full back for the decider next week. With sin bins to ben (i will run through a wall) Davies and to the James (Leo, Blunty, Scragger, English, Screech)Spackman it was going to be a tough 10 minutes. The whole team stuck together and defended courageously to prevent Trinant from scoring until the last play of the game. A great win for The Rocks, a big thank you to everyone who came and supported and bring on Nantyglo. |

St Peters kept the dream alive of winning Division Four East with a convincing points win over fourth placed Trinant. In a game that was very scrappy the St Peters backline showed that they can score tries for fun when they get good clean ball. With perfect weather they ran the ball from almost anywhere. An outstanding four tries from the royal James Spackman puts him in the running for top try scorer with a whopping 18 tries.( not including training) Ben Davies and Steven Ireland also had a good game as did massive Robert Kingdom. James Mullane also had ten minutes towards the end and brought the water on like a trooper he is a true rock. |

The Rocks pack did well in phases but lacked any real aggression or direction. Towards the end of the game Trinant showed that they have real fire power up front and if they had used this as weapon through the entire match then the scoreline may have been closer, they will definitely be tougher to beat next week up in Trinant, so the rocks will need to sharpen up if they want to keep living the dream. Neil Parsons did not exactly have his kicking boots on, he converted only 1 out of 8 kicks. This is unlike Neil as he has an excellent pedigree as a place kicker. I felt the need to bring this up as I to have placed kicked in the past but do not remember ever missing 7 out of 8 kicks, perhaps next week we should try and score under the sticks to give him a better chance. Other than his kicking Parsons had a very good day. The front row deserve a mention for some hard scrummaging, Spam Colly and Conk did not budge and were a pain in the arse throughout the entire game. After one altercation Spam mentioned to his opposite number “ do that again and I will end your life” a classic SPAM line that was taken on board, I don’t know where he comes up with the one liners must be the voices in his head. The back row also played well with 6 and 7 all over the paddock putting in crucial tackles. Murphy was also on top of his game, with his best work coming from the restarts. Bear was crap. Larkem struggled in front of his family but did do quite well in the lineouts, he pinched a fair bit of ball and threw his mandatory two dummies. Jamie Churcher didn’t score for once but had decent game at nine before he was replaced by his younger version who also played well. As a whole it was a good win, the focus needs to be upped for next week when we go away to Trinant. The next two games will be the toughest games yet. We have created big expectations for ourselves , the players need to look inside them selves and bring out the qualities that are required, to win a league is a great achievement and we only have two games to achieve it. Rocks roll up the leagues, by the time I’m 40 we might even be getting payed, and the club would stay open till 11. |

The first time St Peters met Garndithfraith on their home soil, the rocks lost by a point. This meant the home game was always going to be a hard fought and competitive affair, and with both teams at full strength, the game turned out to be the best of the season so far. St Peters lay second in the league before the whistle blew on Saturday, with Garn one place and three points above them. If the Rocks win the they go joint top, if the Garn win they would have a six point lead and would probably win the title, so there could not be much more riding on the outcome of this match. |
|||||||||||||||||||
|
St Peters won the toss and chose to kick with the wind, and straight from the first contact showed that they meant business. The first scrum of the game was bone crunching, with neither front row taking a backward step. Some good rugby was played by both teams for the first 10 minutes, with both defences failing to let anything through. A Neil Parsons penalty finally broke the deadlock and the rocks took an early 3 point lead. Garndithfraith looked on top form but just could not break through the home team defence, some notable tackles coming from key players like Owain Evans, Bear and Steven Ireland. |
|||||||||||||||||||
|
The first try of the game came from Jamie Churcher, he claims from 20 yrds out when really it was more like 6, (which the photo proves) although he did manage to take 3 or 4 players over with him. Try converted by Ginger and the lead extends to 10 points. More competitive play in the midfield results in a turnover and the rocks once again charge forward, Ben Davies with some big runs taking on 2-3 players at a time. The ball is held well by the forwards with Larkem and Murphy both having mercurial days in the loose. A ruck just over halfway results in a couple of players out of position, Ginger feeds the ball to Churcher who is standing at ten and seeing the fullback out of position lofts a high kick over head, with Steven Ireland breathing down his neck the ball takes an awkward bounce, Steven pulls a Maradonna hand of God trick and dives under the sticks. Parsons converts another to the delight of the bog bank and St Peters lead 17-0. A penalty at the other end of the field finally gets the away side on the board and at the break the score reads 17-3 in favour of the Rocks. |

Not to let this go to their heads, the coaching staff (the Mitchell brothers) step in and give words of encouragement. A lead like that can be easily rubbed out, so rightly the wise words are taken on board and St Peters once again come out flying in the second half. A try is scored in the corner after some good line out work and an unstoppable drive the forwards can argue amongst themselves for who ever got that one, conversion missed the lead goes to twenty two points to three. Awakened by this scoreline, the Garn who were urged on by a large support party started to play with some direction and rumbled their way towards the Rocks line, number 12 and 7 doing most of the damage and with 9 controlling at the base the inevitable try came with twenty minutes gone in the second half and with the conversion slotted they looked to mount a come back. However St Peters had been here before and stuck up a united front. Some solid hits and good clean rucking turned the ball over in the opposition half, this resulted in a Ben Davies try to take him up to 14 for the season. Ginger again slotted the 2 neatly and the lead remained. The game took a turn for the worse, when a frustrated Garn realised that this was not to be their day, fights broke out that the referee did not deal with professionally and the game tended to lose control. Substitutions Mike Morgan and Rheesy made a difference and the game once again swung back to the home team. The final nail in the coffin coming from the John Wilkinson like Neil Parsons with a 25 yrd drop goal worthy of any slow motion replay. |
||||||||||||||||||
| The final whistle brought jubilation and the realisation that St Peters could actually win the league. Three games to play and if all goes well the title will be ours. Its in our hands, its down to us , the ball is in our court. No matter what line we strap on it the fact is if we win the next three games we will be champions of the world. I’m going to Disneyland baby! | |||||||||||||||||||

St.Peter's 22 - 3 Tredegar Ironsides Tries: Ben Davies, Simon Colley (2) Conv: N.Parsons (2) Pen: N. Parsons |
Match Report by James Mullane |

|
High flyers Tredegar Ironsides travelled to Minster Rd on Saturday, to play St Peters first XV. There first encounter at the other end of the season was a rugby extravaganza, so with mother nature trying her best to ruin what promised to be a very exciting game, just how would both teams react. The game started well for the home team with some good rugby played in extremely bad conditions, wave after wave of pressure finally ended in the machine like rocks line out driving up the pitch some 20 mtrs until finally the ball was touched down over the try line by Chrissy the sissy Barry, converted easily by Neil Parsons and St Peters go into an early 7-zip lead. The Ironsides were a very good side and made an excellent game of it till the final whistle, with 9 and 10 being the pick of their players. However this was to be St Peters day and the steady head of Neil Parsons pinned the ironsides back to the corners on every given chance. The second try came from the rocks in the form of inside centre Ben Davies, Ben smashed through 4-5 players to charge over the line and give the home team an 11 point advantage. If Ben does not get player of the year it will be a great injustice. With twenty minutes to go another superb line out from Conky gathered in by Larkem and St Peters once again roll on with the line out and go over in the corner to score using another powerful rolling maul, very difficult to stop! ( think Colly was the scorer in front of his Wife and Kids) Ginger once again stroked the ball beautifully and St Peters take the victory convincingly. The good thing about this win apart from three points is that the oldest players on the pitch being myself, Churcher and Macco were on the touchline. Proving that the team that were playing with an average age of say 23 can go on and play for years to come in a very competitive team. All players were exceptional and to pick man of the match would be a tough call; Larkem was exceptional and showed that he is not just a touch and pass player. Rhysey was an animal when he came on and showed why he should be picked more often, the backs played quite well with the wet ball that they received. Ben as always shone as did Joe Ingham when he came on after 25 minutes. Ginger showed a great deal of maturity and will need this in the remaining games this season. C’mon the Rocks. |

It was a fresh, still
and sunny day at the Harlequins on saturday, perfect for champagne
rugby. With garndiffaith losing last weekend, the rocks new 7 wins in 7
games would guarentee the club the Division 4 East title. Therefore
every game was a cup final and with a great aura and confidence in the
dressing room before kick off everyone was positive of a good home win.
St Peter's started well against a young and resilient Talywain side. The forwards were once again immense, creating a solid platform for the backs throughout and 3 early tries was the perfect start, however a series of penalties allowed Talwain to attack the St peter's line, but great defence held out the away side. It was imperitive we drove home our advantage and with more strength and power from the forwards the ref was forced to award a penalty try for Talywain collapsing the scrum. The Rocks finished strongly with two more tries before half time. For the first time this season The Rocks had a chance of a convincing victory and a chance to send a statement to the rest of the league how serious we are about winning this league. The Rocks continued to play great rugby as a team and once Talywain had two players sent off dubiously, the game was over as a contest even though Talywain had scored a break away try. The final score was 89 - 5. You may wonder why I have not named any player in this report, because this victory was just a great team performance from coaches and players alike, with the squad starting to gel perfectly for the end of the season and hopefully we can culid on this victory to complete a successful and memorable season for the club.

Another good win for St Peters first XV on Saturday, the rocks played a home league match against Crumlin and came away with all three points to see them go joint top for the second time this season. It was a perfect day for rugby, and with both teams looking to throw the ball around early this was a decent game to play and watch. The first try for St Peters came from the Lomu like centre Big Ben Davies. The ball went swiftly through the rocks back line after a succession of phases from the home team’s pack, for Ben to score under the posts. This try gives Ben 9 for the season and with 7 games left this year has to be in the running for player of the year. Some good rugby was continued throughout, and with more pressure from the rocks another try was bound to come, and it did from Joe Ingham is the 21st minute. Good work again form the athletic pack pressurised the away team in their own twenty two. A set piece saw James Mullane break through the Crumlin backline and with Ingham in support the try is finished off nicely under the posts.14 nil. Crumlin how ever would not go quietly and with their large pack doing most of their damage St Peters could not rest just yet. Up the jumper went the ball and what looked to be a whitewash suddenly began to turn into quite an even encounter. Crumlin scored a penalty for three and a try just before the break the score going into the half was 17-10 somehow. The half time talk was some what animated and was well deserved, from this telling off St Peters go up another gear and with in ten minutes of the kick off they get back on the board with a try from the captain Paul Macarthy. More and more pressure is put to Crumlin and the cracks begin to show, the rocks throw the ball about religiously and play some very attractive rugby coupled with the strength of the forwards there was only going to be one outcome. Towards the end of the match replacements were brought on and with a minute to go the pack scored another try through 2 tonne prop Suki. Game over 29-10. All players and coaches should be congratulated on another Stella performance, man of the match is hard to give out because everyone played their socks off. Honourable mentions should go out to Paul Mac for his leadership, Ben for some excellent defence, Colley for running like he does in training and not making any excuses and Neil Parsons for his maturity apart from one silly outburst. Any way well done to all.

Another strong away victory for the 1st
XV against Chepstow. The final score being 46 -27 to the Rocks with both
sides playing some good rugby. This now means going into the six nations
St. Peters are firmly in the running for promotion to division three.
A great start form the Rocks pack forced the
Chepstow boys back onto their own line, after some excellent forward
power a try in the first 5 minutes laid the gaudlet down for the day.
After the Chepstow restart St Peters run the ball form their own 22 and
score one of the finest tries of season, with the ball going through no
fewer than 8 pairs of hands to be finished superbly by the mercurial
fullback Jimmy Mullane. With the talented Neil Parsons converted both
tries, the rocks lead 14-0 after ten minutes. Bear,a player of
unserpassed ability and acting as pack leader for the day is dominating
the restarts, lineouts and open play and is a pocket battleship all
game,even though he looks fourty four he plays like a teenager and goes
on to have a man of the match performance. The pack drives on for the
rest of half, although not an easy day they looked to get the better of
their opposite numbers. Chepstow play to their strengths and take the
ball up the gut, maul after maul and result in a unconverted try in the
corner, by this time St Pierre have a firm hold on the game with score
at 29-5 at half time things look good for the visitors.
The second half was much of the same with
some excellent play from St Peters backs, running the ball from their
own line is a must due to the windy conditions. Making numerous breaks
in the Chepstow defence, the 12 ,13 partnership is one for the future,
watching both Steve and Ben play is a pleasure, some great angles of
running and strong tackling means they have to be the first choice every
week. Churcher who was acting as Captain for the day, got stuck in from
start to finish and led the pack well. We would certainly rather play
with him than against him!
Ginger controlled the game better than
normal and had a very solid game at ten, making the right the decisions
at the right time. In the second half St Peters scored three tries
against Chepstows four, its needs to be said that we used the wind to
our advantage in the first half and tended to let them come at us rather
than us finish the game off in the second half. This needs to be
improved as we cannot play this way against the stronger teams in the
division.
To blame the ref is an old cliche , but to
be honest he was petulant and rarely made consistant decisions, he was
quite poor for both sides. For a team to be thirty points up, but have
double the amount of penalties against them is unheard of. When this
does happen in he future, we need to be more disciplined not before the
penalty but after, to talk to the ref and try to get anything out of the
decision is ludicrous, we need to be more professional and walk away no
matter how bad the call is.
Towards the end of the game Chepstow had
conceaded defeat and were playing for pride, and fair play to them they
played with heart right until the final whistle. Their outside half did
well with the ball he had, but the entire back division struggled to
make gaps in the rocks defence, the obvious kicks to the corner with the
wind did not materialize and this was probrably due to some good rush
defence form Owain and Rhys on the flank. Stand out performances form St
Peters came form the entire back line , included a hatrick from James
Blunt, whitnessed by his loving mother.The pack were solid in the scrum,
lineout and the loose, with the picks of the bunch being Bagsy Bear or
Conky. Well done Boys. The J J tout memorial away trophy put in a solid
appearance with Rhys and Timmy Carlos taking their drinking to the next
level, Rhys sholud be ok to make training on Tuesday after having his
stomach pumped. A big thanks for all of the coaches and fans for making
the day so successful, also Danny Mears for being the best commercial
manager possible

It was a bright and blustery day at Hayley Park and after the cross-country trek to a top-quality playing surface; St Peter’s 2nd XV were ready to face Llandaff North in the East District quarterfinal. St Peters started the better of the two but before the Rocks could get over the home side’s line they had conceded three tries after some notable performances; Sean Egan played like he had holes in his hands whilst Aviott and Wicks fumbled like two 12 year olds behind a bike shed all thanks to a swirling wind. As a unit the forwards were excellent but it slowly became apparent to them that the wind was causing some real problems in the back-line and the ball-players were quickly forgiven. Then Paul Aviott showed North’s fullback a clean pair of heels after being put into the gap by David Wicks, and the game was on. Despite this spark of quality and the consummate destruction of North’s lineout and scrum the Rocks were soon 22-10 down and praying for half-time so they could try and capitalise on the conditions after the turn-around. Throughout the game North had provided a real nuisance at the breakdown, slowing and stealing St Peter’s possession but the tide began to turn in the second half once the green and black hoops managed to gain parity in the rucks and mauls. Two tries and a sweet conversion from Egan made it 22-22 with one of the Rocks’ scores coming from a mighty pushover and touchdown by No 8 Matt Murphy. The ref switched to passive scrums when North’s prop got binned for persistent infringement at the breakdown and the St Peter’s team were convinced that meant North had to concede the tie, apparently it didn’t. Normal time ended 22-22, and once again the away team were wrong in thinking this handed them the result. The referee, triggering vociferous protestation from the away support, called for extra time. Somehow the ref then managed to toss-up for kick off without a coin and extra time began with the wind favouring St Peter’s once more. By this time ‘California Steve’ had come on at scrum half for the dependable Joe Davies who had injured his knee. I have now christened him ‘violent Steve’ after conceding a penalty for some vicious stamping. Both teams had to dig deep but there was a positive feeling in the Rock’s camp and their reward was soon in coming. The deciding score came courtesy of David Wicks and excited St Peter’s coach and linesman (Paul Norman) to such an extent that he forgot to stand beneath the posts for the conversion. Deadeye Egan managed to slot the ball clearly through the ‘H’ and that (finally) secured the 2nd XV’s position in the semi-final of the East District Cup. Man of the match? Tough call. The boys all played for each other and the shirt. Dobbin said Danny Murphy, who made some telling breaks and crawled over for a well-deserved try, but there were plenty of other candidates too. Special mention to Dwayne, Cheech, and Rayo in the Rock’s dominant front row, North’s hooker (another North American No. 2) and their number 8 also stood out in a beaten pack. St Peter’s captain Mike Mulane deserves much credit for keeping a calm head with some refereeing decisions and never losing faith in his team, as well as chipping in with a try. Clichéd as it sounds; it was his team’s combined performance that sealed the win.*** Team: 15. S Egan, 14. A Fairclough, 13. P Aviott, 12. J D’Arcy 11. S Budd, 10. D Wicks, 9. J Davies, 8. After a disappointing 1 point defeat last Saturday to Garndiffaith, St Peter’s needed to resume to winning ways against third place Newport High School Old Boys who beat us 36-10 in the first meeting of the season, but with the return of some key players meant the rocks had a strong side and were confident of a good home win.
The first twenty minutes was a tough test with both sides squandering chances and the referee penalising both sides for indiscipline. Strong defence though from the rocks caused a turnover and good hands from Neil Parsons allowed Ben Davies to hit a sublime line to go over for the first try, equalling Rob Kingdom and James Spackman with 8 tries for the season. The rest of the second half was played out with the rocks on top with especially good work from the forwards and bear and co were excellent in disrupting the NHSOB lineout and attempted rolling mauls.
It was going to be a tough test of the teams character in the second half with the little wind and slope against the home team, the rocks came out of the blocks flying and with the rocks putting phase after phase together we made are way up the slope for Kris ‘the gambler’ Barry to go over for a superb team try. Converted by Neil parsons to make it 14-0. The rocks continued to dominate and a good break from Jamie Churcher allowed an overlap for the St Peter’s backs but unfortunately the chance went begging. This and a few dodgy linesman decisions from the visitors representative lifted the away team and poor defence on the left wing allowed them to score two tries which their outside half was unable to convert making it 14-10. The away side pressured the rocks to the end but great defence and determination meant that the rocks returned to winning ways.
Next week is a double header away to Chepstow, we look forward to your support and a good win for everyone to celebrate on the way home.

St Peters knew going up to the Garn would be the day of reckoning, they were right! A coach load of eager players and fans took the fourty mile journey past Pontypool to Garndithfraith, the weather seemed less than perfect but was more than playable. The only change for the game being Paul Sussex for the injured Ben Davies, Paul went on to have a solid game and proved to be more than a handful his opposite number. St.Peters started quite impressively with an early hit from Bear in the first minute, things looked as if they were to go well for the afternoon. But to say that Garn were up for the game was an understatement, for the first twenty minutes they were camped in the rocks twenty two, only some desperate tackling was enough to stop them from scoring 3 or 4 tries in the first half. With 20 minutes gone a silly mistake by Micheal Holloway and St Peters are down to 14 men for ten minutes. For these ten minutes the home team ran riot scoring two tries and a penalty taking them ahead 13-0. Back to full strength and St Peters push forward and go close before have time with a number of solid drives from the pack, to no avail. With halftime upon us the rocks need to look inside themselves. Second half was a completely different game, the same twenty two that Garn were camped in, was now being visited by the away team. St Peters pack came roaring out with some excellent driving mauls and some good clean rucking, looking more like the outfit that we have come to know this year. Pushed on by Jamie Churcher who was making up for a number of fundamental errors in the first half . Another St Peters scrum is awarded after some good pressure and for the first time the home team look like cracking. The ball is fed nicely to runners off the ruck and after some tenacious hits the rocks finally get on the board with a try from Jamie Churcher, cooley converted by Neil Parsons from the corner flag. The game is looking to swing the visitors way, and with the wind and slope Garndithfraith looked out on their feet. Changes at the back and front row made a difference, with Jimmy Charles moving to 9 the game began to speed up. Garn continued to tackle with courage and conviction. With ten minutes to go the ball is put through the back line to James Spackman to go over in the corner, the kick is missed by Mr Parsons and we trail by a point. Much of the rest of the game is frantic with three tries being disaloud for being held up, the penalty count stood at 18 to 5 in favour of the home team, which does nt real give justice to the game. Garndithfraith deserved to win for their first half performance, and St Peters deserved to lose for not showing up for the first 40 minutes. Garndithfraith are good side and showed a lot of character to hold on till the very end, lets hope we show them the same respect and character when they visit Minister road in a couple of months. |

Oakdale went into Saturdays clash firmly at the bottom of division four, and after 20 minutes of rugby it was obvious why they have been struggling. Not to say that they didnt give a 100 %, but a lack of training and working as 15 man team was quite evident. St Peters took the field with one of the best teams of the year, it took no longer than 10 minutes to score the first try of the game, with Mr Kingdom going over in the corner, a missed kick by ginger makes it 5-0. Oakdale try to move the ball forward with what looked their only offensive move, a driving maul! Soon enough the rocks pack counter attack this and find themselves on the oppositions line once again. A solid scrum is pushed over and touched down by No 8 “you do me favour” Archie, converted by Ginger for 12-0. The level of play during this game was not of the highest calibre from both teams and whilst St Peters attempted to run from almost anywhere on the pitch, the final pass was not to hand. However on the stroke of halftime, yet another scrum on the Oakdale line was turned into a try from the eastern block no 8, with Archie on the board for try number two and a conversion in front for Ginger the halftime score reads 19-0. Second half was nt much better than the first apart for some forward rough housing, the pack refusing to be pushed around by the heavier but less effective eight. Scrum after scrum slowed the game down to a snails pace, but for a couple of rare breaks from the St Peters back line. The ever present Jamie Churcher went over with 10 yard run in, which finished off some great handling work from at least 8 rocks boys, conversion missed 24 to nothing. The 25 minutes to go the back entire back row are taken off for a breather and replaced by younger models. With minutes left Ben Davies who struggled to make an impact all afternoon went over the line for another 5 points, conversion missed. 29-0. The scoreline flattered both teams, probably one of the worst games that the first XV have had this year, still we scored five tries and should still be happy with three points to stay joint top. Moments and players that stood out were Jamie Churcher for getting the better of his opposite number in more ways than one, controlled well but a bit to much at times. Spam for his use of foot ware on other players, in hindsight would probably be better if you don’t listen to the voices in your head. Line outs and scrums went well as did most of the forward play, but we do need to compete better for longer periods not just patches here and there. The backs were solid for most of the day and did well with ball that they had, Jim Charles again stood out as a defensive giant.

CHSOB 9 - St. Peter's 33 |
Match Report by Jimmy Ray |

|
Going into Saturdays fixture against the CHSOB, St Peters sat joint top of their division, only points difference separate ourselves and Garndifriath. With this on everyone’s mind the last thing that we wanted to do was let the wheels come off against a mediocre yah yah team. To give them credit where credit is due they did look the part, a long warm up and a lot of noise gave the impression that they would be real challenge. The game kicked off in beautiful conditions, with Macco opting to take the half facing away from the sun, very clever indeed. The conditions were almost perfect for a running game of rugby and that is exactly what the massive crowd got. After two very dodgy penalties from the aging ref, the Rocks find themselves 6-0 down , time to start playing. The yah yah ten didn’t have a bad boot, but on this occasion missed touch which was deftly gathered by James Mullane and through the hands of the backline, a great finish from Ben Davies in the centre who went on to have a man of the match like performance. Its now 6-5 to the CHSOB. St Pierre return the kick off without error and park them selves nicely in the oppositions 22, then some excellent line out work from Bear and co, the ball is stolen and St peters pack rumble up the middle of the pitch, through the hand from Ginger to Mullane to go over for the second try of the afternoon. Try is converted for 12-6 half time. In the second half the rocks fitness took over, and one the fittest men on the field, Spam, showed just how far he has come with 15 yard run and dive to go over in the corner, speechless I m sure you ll all agree. Ginger converted the monster kick from the corner and the rocks lead by 10 clear points. The writing was on the wall and the cracks were starting to appear, the home team tried to run from their own line but lacked conviction, and even with Charlo missing tackle after tackle, the three quarters could not break through St Peters line. A scrum awarded to the opposition resulted in the heavy and well drilled rocks pack pushing the posh pack off the ball, and with cat like reaction Capt Mac was hand to go over from 1 and half yards (carrying 3 players yeah right). Converted easily in front by ginger for a 26-9 lead. We cant lose now and with only seconds to go, the game is sealed by a dazzling display of stepping by young Rob Kingdom, with a fantastic try in the last minute, converted cooley by Jimmy Ray, the game is done another 3 points in the bank. 33-9. A couple of mentions need to go to James Churcher with another solid game , Rees our newest flanker but definitely one of our best. The whole front row were class as were the majority of the pack. A thankyou also needs to go out to Ramsey for stepping up and giving a solid performance on his wing .Bute town was electric and showed there is still life in the old boy. Well done boys, enjoy Crimbo but don’t have any drinking accidents we ve got a league to win. |

Sometimes legends leave the game too early, on other occasions they hold on just that bit to long. Gareth Snook however is an exception to both these rules, he is somewhere on a playing field where the rules of age and retirement do not apply. It can honestly be said that without old timers like Jimmy “the tackle”Charles, Gareth Snook and Butetown the younger generation of the starting fifteen would have struggled on Saturday, but lets not get the old head boys heads to large just yet. St Peters as a team were well off the form that has put them at the top of the table and if we want to remain in contention to win the league this year, performances like Saturday need to be improved. We can’t just get by with ugly wins for the rest of the year. There were some brighter moments in the game, two tries from James “blunt” Spackmen puts him up there with Rob kingdom on try count, also Spam staying on the pitch after all of his 15 players were telling him off, I think you ll find it was 14 players and the voice in your head talking Micheal. The pack again worked hard but lacked the edge that they have shown in recent weeks, although they made good yardage they did not click as in the past. Timmy Carless introduction to the game was marred by poor lineout throwing although what he lacked in the restarts he more than made up for in the loose with some excellent tackling and jackling, which I might add he invented to the world of rugby. Macco put in a solid last twenty as did the remaining pack, Owen was everywhere again and probably would have got man of the match if it wasn’t for Jimmy Charles and his heroic tackling, charles made it a point not to miss a hit and led from the front with some ferocious stops.Jamie Churcher deserves a mention for another big try and some clever kicking, the backs worked well when the ball came to them and made numerous chances, lets be honest we scored four tries which is good for any team, and the fact that we are not happy with the performance shows how far we have come this season. CHSOB Saturday will not be easy, lets get training, lets improve on our errors, stay top for Xmas and then concentrate on January. ( and get ready for the X factor, it’s a huge event) |

Match Report by Jimmy Ray Mullane |

It was cold November evening as our division four heroes pulled up to the pitch black car park, heavy snow could be seen through the floodlights of the boggy pitch. Not put off by this the rocks quickly get changed and make their way onto the the paddock, focused on winning, led by their capitano Paul Mac they strike first with howling wind at their back the rumbling pack move closer and closer to line. Ball is kept tight and driven straight into the heart of the Sengy defence, hard yards is the soup of the day and St Peters get on the board with a starter from Owen Evans, the conversion was missed by Ginger who had rough day due to re occurring ankle injury. Rocks lead five nil. Sengy came barnstorming back with a number of forwards taking the bit between their teeth running taxi after taxi through the middle, eventually touching down just to the right of the posts for converted try.7-5 to the home team. By now St Pierre look like the team that should be above the division 3 leaders and with more hard yards from the ferocious pack, keeping the ball buried in Sengy 22, good defence and some very dodgy reffing meant the visitors could only manage a penalty slotted by Jimmy Mullane with his left foot no doubt. The visitors again reacted with 9 man rugby and managed to get within kicking range twice and neatly slotted them for a further six points. Half time was upon us and the changes rang in, Ginger could no longer play due to his ankle, and was replaced the Mark Ring like James Mullane. Paul Aviot had earlier replaced Steve Ireland and would go on to have one the best games I ve seen him play, also Cheech Running Bull replaced Capt Mac who also went on to have strong 40 minutes. The second half was not for the faint hearted as St peters had the wind in against them they would proceed to run 80 % of the ball they aquired, this developed in some French style handling from all 15 of the rocks, with some brilliant inter passing between backs and forwards. Against the run of play Sengy scored a try from a rocks line out and once again they were on top. With 15 minutes to go the never say die attitude that has been our mission statement this year took over, relentless mauling from the forwards gave us excellent field position and when Sengy could not deal with the Argetinian style scrimmaging the ref was forced to give a penalty under the posts. Up stepped Jamie Churcher and like a one man wedge drove through the home teams defence to score a well deserved try, give that man some birthday cake. Conversion was slotted by Jimmy ray who could nt really miss from there but has in the past… Apperently we are three points down at this point although the ref did not know the actual score, play goes on and more booming kicks come from the fullback. Camped on our own line we win a penalty which is taken up by Archie then to bear, through larkems hands to Corsi, its good to watch, by this time we again camped in the opposition 22 and if the referee had any bottle would have given a penalty try but we settled for three in front and the game ended a draw. Players and coaches alike were vey pleased with the performance, it is no mean feat to go to division above and come away with 18 all, every player should be proud of them selves especially the forwards who stuck there bodies on the line, lets keep this going into the league games ahead and who knows we could be champions, one thing is for sure we wont go down, we re safe.

Tredegar Ironsides 19 - 23 St. Peter's Tries: Rob Kingdom, James Spackman, Kris Barry, James Mullane, Pen: Simon Colley |
|||
| Just
like in the game of paper, scissors stone - the sharpness of the Ironsides
was blunted by the Rock on their own turf this weekend.
Tredegar Ironsides were defending a 2 year home winning streak prior to the visit of the Rocks this weekend and defended their record valiantly, but St. Peter's, under the leadership of Paul McCarthy, proved far too strong and the record came tumbling doooooowwwwnnnn!!!! The sun shone on both teams in Tredegar yesterday, as St. Peter's entered the fray wearing their new kit in the familiar returning colours of emerald green and black. |
|||
|
With the return of the emerald and black the rocks responded with an afternoon of magic, entertaining the crowd of almost 150 spectators, most of whom unfortunately went home miserable after watching the home team suffer their first home defeat in almost 2 years. The vocal home support were gradually quietened as the afternoon progressed and the early jeering from the home support was replaced by quiet groans as St.Peter's forwards and backs dazzled from 1-15.
| Tredegar
opened the scoring after 5 minutes with a runaway try following turnover
ball. Captain Paul McCarthy was typically cool with his team, leading from
the front and encouraging a calm attitude amongst his players. St.Peter's
responded well with early expansive passing movements. On the nine minute
mark the ball was whisked quickly through the hands to wing James Spackman
who, if it were not for an untimely bounce following an chip and chase
would certainly have put team mates over for their first score.
|
|||
|
|||
Just
before the half way mark of the first period, Jimmy Ray Mullane
demonstrated superb speed of foot to race back 40 yards to his own try
line following a kick through by the Ironsides to save a certain try. The
St. Peter's pack were solid in defence and took a 5 yard scrum against the
head to clear their own lines.
Half time allowed coaches Chris, Tim and Wayne to sort out any minor points and to improve an already confident team. The next score of the game went to the returning Kris Barry. Scrum five yards out saw Matthew Murphy pick up from the base of the scrum and drive forward feeding the waiting Barry who covered the 60mm to the try line as if time did not matter. St.Peter's took the lead. Unaccustomed to being on the receiving end at home, the poetic Tredegar captain informed his players under the posts, "This is our Home pitch. We do not lose. This is the ******* rec." (Not one of his best motivational speeches methinks.) The game continued to have many ups and downs not least James Spackman calling a mark when the ball was till 40 feet above his head - and the Tim Carless incident! ****wit! Ben Davies and Paul Sussex continued to cause difficulty for the home centres breaking the defence regularly and blocking any attempted attacking lines from the home team. |
|||
|
|||
| More
pressure on the Tred line gave St. Peter's a penalty just left of the
posts. Seeing 4 conversions go amiss is generally all a loosehead can
take, so up step Simon 'golden boots' Colley to slot over a three pointer
on 74 minutes. The slump in the home team and their support was obvious
with six minutes to go and two scores down.
Never to go down quietly St. Peters continued to attack the home defences. Confident breaks by No.8 Matthew Murphy and Centre Ben Davies continued to cause the Gwent team difficulties. A great win for the Cardiff team and if I remember rightly - a fairly good night out after!! |

| In
arguably the Rocks best performance of the season to date, St. Peter's
first team convincingly dealt with an early onslaught from the Nantyglo
back division before running away with a handsome victory on the
Harlequins field.
St. Peter's had much to celebrate in the last game of October, as for the first time in many a year St. Peter's fielded two teams at home on the Harlequins playing fields. The day certainly belonged to the Roath boys this weekend as the second team, pushed agonisingly close by a strong Llanishen team, pulled through with a last minute penalty from Sean Egan to seal the match 18-16. The Rocks first team started in defensive mode as Nantyglo barraged them with an onslaught of open rugby initiated by a dynamic outside half and an ostrich like full-back. St. Peter's however were disciplined in all areas of the field and held out the Blaina attacks. Following a number of fruitless attacks from Nanty, St.Peter's turned over scrappy ball and shifted it quickly along their own back line. Ben Davies forcibly drove through the Gwent line before feeding a strong Spackman, who made good ground along the near-side touch line. Supported well by James Charles, the Rocks pack drove him over the line for a 5-0 opening try. After twenty minutes Nantyglo pressurised the home try line for a period of of at least 8 minutes, but St. Peter's refused to yeild on their own turf. A big hit by Owen Evans dislodged the ball from the Red and Blacks and St. Peter's cleared their lines efficiently. Unfortunately for Nantyglo that was their last big attack of the game. St. Peter's who have been tireless in their pursuit of fitness this season closed the first half with a planned move in mid-field allowing Burly Ben Davies to power through the defence for a converted try under the sticks. Early into the second half a solid lineout from returning Matthew Murphy and ensuing maul infield allowed Darren 'the whippet' Priday to ghost blind and feed Rob Kingdom for a simple 30 yard run in. St. Peter's had a number of chances in the second half which were uncompleted suggested that this win was a glimpse of what is yet to come. The game was put to bed with a well taken penalty by Jimmy'Ray' Mullane and followed up with a try by the ever present Mike Morgan. St. Peter's now go into the autumn International season with just one league match in November away at Tredegar Ironsides on the 12th. Three floodlit games at Cilfynnydd, Machen and Senghennyd should allow them to keep in touch with this open exciting style of play. Good effort Boys!!! |

Peter's II 18 - 16 Llanishen III Tries: Haval Ibrahim, Jamie Churcher Pen: Sean Egan I cant even remember who kicked off but hey! Someone kicked the ball. The first half was pretty even we made a lot of good runs, unfortunately we turned over the ball every so often and their full back would hoof the ball back into space. Luckily there were a couple of Welsh guys - no idea yet who they were. but they gave a good account of themselves and took the ball on - hoofing it back occasionally I guess. Let's see... We were definitely superior in the line outs. Thanks in no small part to the little brown hooker. Hey. The forwards were very good at taking the ball on with quick picks from the bottom of the rucks. Every so often the backs tried to do something which resulted in a scrimmage, where the pack had to take it back on. It was clear that the other team - who were these hosers? - couldn't really compete. Red and black looks good on no-one! A few tries later and a couple of shocking kicks at goal the referee finally decided he should bin one of our boys for taking a smack in the face (nothing to do with the mountain climbing he was doing). That was Yorkie - one of the few names I remember! A short time later the game sort of ended and we went out for the real entertainment of the evening. Yeh good fun. Cheech

St.Peter's 24 - 21 Chepstow Tries: James Spackman (2), Simon Colley, Mike Morgan. Conv: James Mullane (2) If you wanted to lose your fingernails last weekend, then the Harlequins Roath was the place to be! St. Peter's entertained Chepstow RFC in a rain soaked event when the sun didn't shine for the rocks until the 82nd minute. St Peter's were trailing 17 - 21 at this point when, following an intense period of pressure from St. Peter's and in true Welsh fashion, the ball traveled quickly through the forwards hands sucking in the Chepstow pack. The gap opened up close to the maul and Mike Morgan, ever hungry for the line sealed the game for the Rocks. Jimmy Mullane had a bright moment for the afternoon by slotting the conversion before the man in the middle blew for full time. The game had started well for St. Peter's who threw bucket loads of pressure at Chepstow, who eventually conceded the inevitable penalty under the posts. Unfortunately Jimmy Mullane was having an off day which started with the kick glancing the outer upright. Jimmy later said in the after match revelry " you can say what you like a bout me today - its all true!" As the half way stage passed in the first period Mike Morgan slipped passed the Chepstow blind side flanker and fed James Spackman, playing on the left wing. Spackman burst his way out of one tackle and, like a lazy wind, drove straight through the Chepstow full back as though he didn't exist. 40 yards of fresh air for Spackman saw St. Peter's take a 5-0 lead unconverted. Minutes later Chepstow missed a penalty of their own in front of the posts allowing Darren Priday, playing at 10, to demonstrate his individual own kicking skills. Slight of foot from Priday taking a drop out 22 saw him flick the ball from the outside of his right foot to the waiting hands of Mike Morgan ready to attack the minimal Chepstow right flank. Unfortunately the ball was fumbled very shortly afterwards nullifying the possible attack. Replacements at half time allowed Lloyd Barratt to shine at number 8 for Artus (Archie) Kozels who left the field injured. Five minutes into the second half St. Peter's ran a practiced move from a lineout moving the ball quickly to Paul Sussex who carried forcibly up the guts of the Chepstow defense. The ball was cleaned out quickly to Morgan who fed Spackman again on the wing to cross in the corner. The difficult touchline conversion was deftly slotted by Mullane. St. Peter's unfortunately went off the boil for a while, for quite a while. Following the kick off, which Chepstow inventively did not kick to the pack, try line pressure from the East Wales team saw them cross over to start a come back at 12-7. While spectators watched replacement Martin Bird come on for Luke Egan followed by Chris Newton being invited by the match referee to take a ten minute rest, the finger nails began to shorten. Chepstow crossed for a second try against a depleted pack to take the lead at 12-14. Further replacements saw player coach Tim Carless join in the action for Paul Thomas, who had been electric throughout the game, competing for every ball he could see, touch and smell. Chepstow scored a third try on the 74th minute which allowed a few well chosen words from coaches Tim Carless and Chris Churcher to fire the Roath boys for a final 8 minutes. St. Peter's piled on the pressure forcing Chepstow to transgress repeatedly, allowing the referee to dig in to his pocket for the yellow for the second time that afternoon. Although the penalty was certainly within range, at nine points down, the kick for the corner was the taken option. On 77 minutes St. Peter's again worked their magic at the lineout. A salmon like leap from the Rocks second row and quick ball movement within the maul allowed Birthday-Boy Simon Colley to cross to take St. Peter's close to their mark at 17-21. Chepstow's frustration saw another yellow being shown and the rest, just like the spectator's nails .... is history. Well done St. Peter's. An excellent victory. St. Peter's travel away to Crumlin next week in another league encounter.

Tries: Paul Thomas, Owen Evans St.Peters II 27 - 15 Caerau II Tries: Jo Ingham (2), David Wicks, Rob Kingsford, Chris Wagstaff Conv: David Wicks Match Report by Mike Baldwin: Bear in mind its accuracy is questionable being written by a prop who was a*se up in the scrum whilst most of the play was going on. With a much changed line up from previous weeks, due to call offs from their own side and the 1st XV, the Rocks started well and settled into their preferred open style but spurned early scoring chances due to poor handling and choice of options before allowing Caerau to take an early lead from a penalty. This score resulting from Caerau’s first meaningful attack seemed to shake the rocks who responded with much improved phase play and a well worked try wide out from wing Joe Ingham. A second try from our growing population of students, Dave soon followed and was again a result of good approach phase play.
